One Day Chimpanzee Tour is day trip to Ngamba Island Sanctuary in Lake Victoria Entebbe Uganda. Ngamba Island provides a safe place for the rescued or the orphaned chimpanzees.
Ngamba Island is 100 acres (approximately 40 hectares) of rain forest situated a short boat ride (23 km) away from Entebbe, near the Equator in Lake Victoria, Uganda. It supports a rich diversity of natural wildlife and provides a variety of natural foods for the chimpanzees. The island is set up as an eco – friendly project with compost toilets, rainwater collection, proper waste management practices and solar energy for electricity and hot water. The sanctuary is open all year round to visitors who pay a nominal entrance fee to view one or both of the chimpanzee feedings. Day and overnight visits staying in luxury tents are available and can be booked through the booking agent, Gorilla Safaris Tours.
The sanctuary is home to 49 orphaned chimps rescued from throughout Uganda. The island facilitates offer day trips and overnight trips which provide exceptional opportunity to closely observe and interact with these fascinating great apes in this unique setting.
Day one starts off from your place of pick very early in the morning for the morning session and for the afternoon session. You meet up with your driver/ guide from Gorilla Safaris Tours for briefing and drive to Lake Victoria. Once you get to Lake Victoria, we shall get on a speed boat which will take around 45 minutes of travel on water to Ngamba Island. The views from island and Lake Victoria are spectacular with many different bird species. This also gives an opportunity to those who have always wanted to see how Lake Victoria loos like, you will many local fishermen with their local fishing tools.
Upon arrival at Ngamba Island Sanctuary, you will be directed to the visitor directed to the visitor centre where you will be given an introduction to the project, its history, residents and plight. On each of the two types of the day visits, half and full day, you will receive an educational orientation by a chimpanzee care giver and view a feeding of the chimpanzees full day visitors. Full day visitors will view 2 feeding from the visitors’ raised platform area along the edge of the sanctuary fence. Half day visitors will watch the rehabilitated chimpanzees’ feed, groom and socialize. The chimps come out from the forest at the designated feeding times. They are accustomed to the feeding times and will come close to the fence for supplementary feeding. In the Mid-afternoon, you will cross back over Lake Victoria to Entebbe or move to your next destination.
For those who choose to do the full day chimp excursion, after the chimp feeding, you will be taken through the different centres at the island. The chimp caregiver explains how to healthy keep the chimp food and types of food given to the chimps. The management only helps these chimpanzees on a few fruits like tomatoes, water melons, pineapples, carrots, oranges, passion fruits, jack fruits, cassava, cabbages among others, which may not be enough from their searches in the forest. You also tour the clinic and are taken through how to care for the chimps, types of treatment offered and their general health status.
When taking the day one trip to Ngamba Island Sanctuary, you also support Wildlife Conservation Trust, which is working to protect the forest habitat of the chimps and caring for those unable to return to the wild.
