Rwanda is gifted by nature due to the various tourism sites found within including Nyungwe forest national park and this becomes more colorful if combined with Virunga National Park which is a Democratic Republic of Congo based national park. Nyungwe forest national park is located in the south western corner of Rwanda and it is well versed with a tropical rain forest with a nice stunning canopy. Forest Hiking Trails
The park has got around 130km hiking trails that are available for hiking, visitors can explore the park through the fascinating habitats and hiking through the trail will take you around eight hours. Going through Igishigishigi trail is one of the best and fruitful hikes since it short but you encounter one of the best and highest canopy which costs $60. This allows you to see various primates including black and white colobus monkeys, another trail known as Bigugu that leads you to the mountain which is the highest around the park and this is found at 2950m and it takes 6hours. Other trails include, the Ngabwe trail, Kamiranzovu, Isumo waterfall trail, Karamba birding trail, Muzimu, Imbaraga, Umugote and Congo Nile drive trails and hiking fees are $40 per person.
Nyungwe primate tour
If you are looking for a great deal of primates safari, then Nyungwe becomes your number one priority with at least 13 different primate species with the best being chimpanzees, chimp tracking is the mostly done activity here and the those willing to track are required to report early at the park headquarters to be briefed and chimps are tracked in a group of eight people and one hour is given to the trekkers in the presence of the chimps, these engage in playful and human like activities in the presence of the visitors hence making your day a true one. During the process of chimp trekking, you can also see the Rwenzori colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabey, L’Hoest’s Monkeys and other primate. Chimpanzee tracking permits costs $90 per person per trek.
For bird lovers, this is another spot centre for the different bird species in Rwanda and here you will be guided by our experienced tour guide who is well versed with the different bird species including the 27 endemic bird species which are only seen here in the tropical forest. These includes the Rwenzori Turaco, Giant horn bills, great blue Turacos, red-breasted Sparrow hawk just to mention but a few and all these are found here in the Albertine region
After your wonderful exploration of Nyungwe, then you can proceed to another country for gorilla trekking adventure and this will lead you to Democratic Republic of Congo, Virunga national park is one of the most biodiversity with a sub-Saharan type of climate with the most geology containing the most active volcano in Africa. Virunga National Park is one of the parks where you can enjoy a hike to the coldness areas high.
This is one of the most interesting activities done here in the park since it offers the best trekking trails to the top. The hike starts early in the morning after a brief from the park ranger and hiking to the top of the mountain takes one, Mount Nyiragongo clocks in at 3,470 meters (11,385 feet). Though this might not seem very high, hikers ascend in just a single day and altitude sickness is fairly common at the summit. Consider taking Diamox or another altitude medication for a better experience, and make sure to hydrate and have Advil on hand. This is an interesting activity since it is somehow cheap at $300 per person, you can hike the mountain.
Every visitor who wishes to climb the mountain needs to come well prepared with walking boots, warm cloths, hats, sweaters, scarves, gloves and head socks. Make sure to also pack additional snacks, as well as excellent HD cameras that you will use to take photos. No need to bring tents since at the top of the volcano there is already built up tents where visitors sleep after experiencing the crater with its yellowish gases. Porters are available at the base of the hike and these charges $24 per hike and they can be hired to carry hiking packs less than 15kgs up the mountain.
After this wonderful trek and a rest, the next day you may indulge in gorilla trekking which starts at Bukima Patrol post where trekkers start from and gorilla trekking in Congo is the cheapest since a gorilla permit goes at $400 per person and per trek. This will take you through the ridges and the improved trails around as early as 8am and you will be provided with rangers who are well armed and these will lead you throughout the activity. You will be provided with one hour in the presence of the gorillas.
